Kamala Harris

 Kamala Devi Harris born October 20, 1964) is an American politician and attorney who is the 49th and current vice president of the United States. Harris is the first female vice president and highest-ranking female official in U.S. History, as being the first African American and second Asian American vice president. As a member the Democratic Party, she was the attorney general for California in 2011-2017 and she was a United States senator representing California in 2017-2021. Harris was born and was raised in Oakland, California. Her first job was in the Alameda County District Attorney's Office. Harris was later recruited to the San Francisco District Attorney's Office. In 2003, she was elected district attorney of San Francisco. In 2010, she was elected Attorney General of California and then re-elected in 2014. Harris was the junior United States Senator from California between 2017 and 2021. Harris defeated Loretta Santiago in the 2016 Senate election making her the 2nd African American woman to serve in Congress and the first South Asian American American to do so in the United States Senate. As a senator she advocated health reform, federal descheduling for cannabis, a path for immigrants who are not legal citizens and the DREAM Act and a ban on assault weapons. Harris also backed progressive tax reform. She was praised nationally due to her sharp questions of Trump administration officials in Senate hearings, including Trump's second Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, who was accused of sexual assault.
